ELD
ELD means electronic logging device: a regulated way to record a commercial driver’s Hours-of-Service. Location may be part of that record. The mandate is still about duty status.
Definition
An electronic logging device (ELD) records a commercial driver’s duty status to support Hours-of-Service rules. Many ELD platforms also show truck location because the same hardware has a GNSS receiver. That convenience does not turn a trailer tracker into an ELD, and it does not turn TruckerPro GPS into a compliance product.
Why this glossary entry exists
Searchers blend the two categories. If you need driver logs, use a registered ELD. If you need dropped-trailer or equipment location, you need asset tracking—possibly in addition to Motive, Samsara, or Geotab. The longer comparison is GPS tracker vs ELD.
