How Trailer GPS Tracking Works

A plain-language explanation of the technology—and a clear boundary between general GPS concepts and the TruckerPro components that do not exist yet.

The short answer: a tracker calculates a position from navigation satellites, sends telemetry over a supported network, and relies on backend software to store and present it. TruckerPro is currently evaluating only the hardware candidates; its ingestion and customer application still need to be built.

1. The device calculates a position

GNSS is the broad term for satellite-navigation systems such as GPS and GLONASS. A compatible device receives satellite signals and estimates its location. Accuracy and time-to-fix vary with installation, sky view, environment, antenna orientation, and configuration.

2. The device attempts to send telemetry

Both candidate devices support LTE-M; the TAT141 candidate also supports NB-IoT. Hardware capability is not the same as active service or guaranteed coverage: a carrier plan, supported bands, roaming, provisioning, signal, and operating region all matter. TruckerPro has not selected or advertised a coverage footprint.

3. Backend software must ingest and secure the data

A production service needs authenticated device provisioning, a vendor integration or compatible endpoint, validation, storage, access controls, retention rules, monitoring, and failure recovery. Those components are planned TruckerPro work, not live functionality.

4. A customer application turns data into workflows

Maps, location history, geofences, movement notifications, and mileage summaries are application features layered on top of the telemetry. TruckerPro intends to evaluate them with pilot users. It does not currently offer IFTA-ready reports, theft recovery, safety monitoring, or emergency response.

Configuration is a provisioning task, not “pair it over Bluetooth.” Runtime depends heavily on reporting profile, signal, movement, temperature, and battery condition, so the pilot does not promise a fixed number of months.

Questions

Is this how the TruckerPro service works today?

No. The device-to-cloud and customer-application stages are an intended architecture. TruckerPro has not launched device ingestion or a customer GPS platform.

Where will the trackers work?

Both candidates support LTE-M; the TAT141 candidate also supports NB-IoT. TruckerPro has not selected carrier service or established geographic coverage. Coverage must be tested during the pilot.

What will the service cost?

Pricing, service terms, warranty, support, and availability have not been finalized. Selected pilot participants will receive written terms before committing.
